NJ RADON RISK LEVELS FOR HOMEOWNERS:

Understanding Your Municipality’s Radon Potential

USE THE SEARCH BELOW
to find your municipality and its radon potential

TIER 1 –High Radon Potential

Tier 1: High potential – at least 25 homes tested with 25 percent or more having radon concentrations greater than or equal to 4 pCi/L.

TIER 2 – Moderate Radon Potential

Tier 2: Moderate potential – at least 25 homes tested with 5 to 24 percent having radon concentrations greater than or equal to 4 pCi/L.

TIER 3 – Low Radon Potential

Tier 3: Low potential – at least 25 homes tested with less than 5 percent having radon concentrations greater than or equal to 4 pCi/L.

Tier Assignment Definitions

The Department of Environmental Protection’s tier system classifies municipalities as having high, moderate or low potential for indoor radon problems based on the percentage of homes with radon concentrations greater than or equal to 4 picocuries/liter (pCi/L). For each incorporated municipality, tier assignments are based on all testing data available to the Department, including mandatory radon test results reported by certified radon measurement businesses and former voluntary radon test results.

NOTES IN THE SECOND COLUMN

Note 1: Once a municipality is designated as Tier 1, the Department does not lower the Tier even though the percentage is below 25. This is because the required radon-resistant new construction techniques in Tier 1 areas have the effect of lowering radon levels. By keeping Tier 1 designations permanent, fluctuations in Tier assignments and thus radon resistant new construction requirements are prevented.

Note 2: This municipality has been designated Tier 1 based on geology
