General Licenses

What is a General License (GL) and what is a Generally Licensed Device (GLD)?

A GL is a General License that is issued to a person or organization that acquires, uses or possesses a generally licensed device (GLD) within the state of New Jersey. A GLD is a device that contains radioactive material that is typically used to detect, measure or determine the thickness, density, level or chemical composition of various items. Examples of such devices are certain density gauges, fill-level gauges, static eliminators and X-ray Florescence (XRF) devices. (Note: The Pb200e XRF device is considered an exempt device and is not issued a GL.) To register your GLD and receive a GL, please email Christopher Giaquinto. In response, you will receive a blank Form 664 that you will be instructed to fill out and email back.

When you purchase a GLD from a manufacturer the manufacturer will inform you if it needs to be registered. However, you can use the chart below to help determine if you need to register your device:

Activity
Isotope (mCi) (MBq)
Cesium-137 10 370
Stronium-90 0.1 3.7
Cobalt-60 1 37
Radium-226 0.1 3.7
Americium-241 1 37
Any other transuranic (element with the atomic number greater than uranium (92)) 1 37
