Radon Professional Certification

Individuals must become certified under the radon certification regulations to test for and mitigate radon in New Jersey. 

Initial Radon Certification Applications and Procedures

IF YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN CERTIFIED BEFORE

If you are an individual that HAS NEVER BEEN CERTIFIED BEFORE you must complete the the Initial Radon Measurement Technician application.  See below for instructions on completing the application.

  • When your application is complete, please mail the original Initial Measurement Technician (MET) application and NON-REFUNDABLE $75 application fee (payable to Treasurer, State of New Jersey) to the appropriate address
    • Mail the original application to:  New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Radon Section, Mail Code 25-01, P. O. Box 420, Trenton, New Jersey 08625-0420.
    • If mailing via FedEx, UPS, or DHL use:  New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Radon Section 25 Arctic Pkwy, Ewing NJ 08638.
  • Complete Section A PERSONAL INFORMATION
    • Input your name, social security number, home mailing address, physical address, home phone number, cell phone number, email address, alternate email address, and fax number.
  • Complete Section B BUILDING TYPES TO BE TESTED
    • Check residential single-family buildings, residential multifamily buildings, nonresidential large buildings, and/or schools. You may select more than one building type. Please note: an eight-hour training course is required for multifamily buildings and/or large buildings and schools.
    • One certificate is acceptable if a course specifies that it covers more than one building type; for example, if a course addresses schools and large buildings, one certificate may be submitted to fulfill the training requirement for both building types.
  • Complete Section C ATTACHMENTS
    • Please attach all the requirements listed below with your application:
      • Attend a 16-hour initial training course. Training courses can be found on the NRPP Website and the NRSB Website
      • Pass the Radon Measurement Technician exam. The exam can be taken with either of the following organizations: NRPP Website or NRSB Website
      • Meet the requirements of the New Jersey regulations for Certification of Radon Testers and Mitigators (N.J.A.C. 7:28-27) for the measurement technician certification category.
      • If you use continuous radon monitors and/ or electret devices, complete and submit the appropriate portable device form which can be found here . Submit proof of passing a proficiency test for each model listed on the MET & MES Portable Device List. Proficiency testing information may be found at Frequently Asked Questions
      • If you do not use a continuous radon monitor or electret device, you do not need to attach a MET & MES portable device form or include a proficiency test.
  • Complete Section D CERTIFICATION SIGNATORIES
    • Please do not forget to sign and date the application.
    • Congrats, you have completed the MET Initial application.
IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUS CERTIFICATION

If you are an individual that HAS BEEN CERTIFIED BEFORE you must complete the the Initial Radon Measurement Technician application .

If you have never been certified before

If you are an individual that HAS NEVER BEEN CERTIFIED BEFORE you must complete the the Initial Radon Measurement Specialist  application.  See below for instructions on completing the application.

      • Pass the Radon Measurement Professional or the Radon Measurement Specialist exam. The exam can be taken with either of the following organizations: NRPP Website or NRSB Website
      • Meet the requirements of the New Jersey regulations for Certification of Radon Testers and Mitigators (N.J.A.C. 7:28-27) for the measurement technician certification category.  A certified radon measurement specialist shall possess the following:
        • Documentation of education shall consist of: a certified copy of a transcript from an accredited institution showing the applicants name and degree awarded from the options below:
          • A Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or a natural science, which includes biology, chemistry, physics, geology, or environmental science and one year of radiation work experience;
          • A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in any subject other than as identified above and two years of radiation work experience;
          • An associate’s degree in any subject and four years of radiation work experience;
          • Five years of radiation work experience; or
          • A certified health physicist certification accreditation.
        • Documentation of work experience shall consist of: a letter from either the employer with whom the applicant obtained the work experience, or an individual other than the applicant who has extensive knowledge of the applicants work experience, listing all applicable work experience and the dates or range of dates that the applicant performed work.
      • If you use continuous radon monitors and/ or electret devices, complete and submit the appropriate portable device form which can be found here .       • Pass the Radon Mitigation Specialist exam. The exam can be taken with either of the following organizations: NRPP Website or NRSB Website
      • Meet the requirements of the New Jersey regulations for Certification of Radon Testers and Mitigators (N.J.A.C. 7:28-27) for the measurement technician certification category.  A certified radon measurement specialist shall possess the following:
        • Documentation of education shall consist of: a certified copy of a transcript from an accredited institution or course agenda, a certificate from a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning training provider, and/or documentation from the radon mitigation specialist from whom the individual received mitigation instruction through observing radon mitigation system installation.
          • Relevant education means college level studies in architecture or engineering, technical school education in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, and/or mitigation instruction throughobserving radon mitigation system installation under the direction of a radon mitigation specialist.
        • Documentation of work experience shall consist of: a letter from the employer with whom the individual obtained the work experience, or from a reference that has extensive knowledge of the individual’s work experience. In either case, the letter must outline all applicable responsibilities and specific dates performed.
          • Relevant work experience means the design, construction, and renovation of buildings and/or the design and installation of mitigation systems if he or she has obtained mitigation experience by being licensed, certified, or accredited by another state or a nationally recognized organization.
        • The education and work experience requirements shall not apply to an individual who provides documentation that he or she holds a valid license in New Jersey as a professional engineer.

If you had a previous certification

If you are an individual that HAS BEEN CERTIFIED BEFORE you must complete the the Initial Radon Mitigation Specialist application .

To amend a certification, a radon professional must submit the appropriate form below. Changes to certification will not be accepted without a completed a signed amendment form.
