Class D Recycling Facilities –
December 2022
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_tta_accordion color=”white” spacing=”1″ c_icon=”chevron” c_position=”right” active_section=”-1″ collapsible_all=”true”][vc_tta_section title=”Universal Waste” tab_id=”universal-waste”][vc_column_text css=””]The Universal Waste Rule permits certain hazardous wastes known as “Universal Wastes” to be managed under streamlined requirements that will encourage the collection, recycling or disposal of these wastes. Before the universal waste management standards were in place, all hazardous waste were required to be managed under the full range of the hazardous waste management standards. Persons that generate or accumulate universal waste are called universal waste handlers and are subject to specific management standards depending on the type and amount of universal waste that is accumulated. Universal waste management requirements are less stringent than those for hazardous wastes.
In New Jersey the following materials are managed as Universal Waste:
- Batteries
- Pesticides
- Mercury-Containing Equipment | Management information in New Jersey.
- Lamps | New Jersey Fact Sheet, Management information in New Jersey and Listing of facilities that receive lamps for recycling but do not process them.
- Aerosol Cans
- Electronics
- Oil-based Finishes | Management information in New Jersey.
- Latex Paint
Facilities handling universal waste are classified as either a Small Quantity Universal Waste Handler or a Large Quantity Universal Waste Handler as detailed below:
- Small quantity handler of universal waste means a universal waste handler (as defined in this section) who does not accumulate 5,000 kilograms or more of universal waste (batteries, pesticides, mercury-containing equipment, lamps, or aerosol cans, calculated collectively) at any time.
- Large quantity handler of universal waste means a universal waste handler who accumulates 5,000 kilograms or more total of universal waste (batteries, pesticides, mercury-containing equipment, lamps, or aerosol cans, calculated collectively) at any time. This designation as a large quantity handler of universal waste is retained through the end of the calendar year in which the 5,000-kilogram limit is met or exceeded.
