Program Description
The On-Road Vehicle Electrification Program focuses on modernizing the Medium and Heavy-Duty (MDHD) Fuel-Powered Vehicle sector with Zero-Emission Alternatives. On-road MDHD diesel vehicles such as garbage trucks, street sweepers, passenger shuttles and buses, delivery vans, etc. operate adjacent to the general population throughout the state and can pose a public health risk by emitting NOx and Particulate Matter into communities, particularly environmentally overburdened ones. Diesel emissions not only contribute to poor air quality but can hinder the quality of life of NJ residents.
This sector of vehicles is frequently left to idle, exposing the local residents and passerby’s to harmful excess diesel emissions which, over time, can sometimes lead to serious health risks.

Vehicle electrification project proposals are accepted and reviewed on an ongoing basis. The five electric trucks served as a replacement for five older, heavy-polluting diesel trucks, which were decommissioned to ensure they could no longer be used. The five electric refuse trucks are only a fraction of the City’s fleet, but they bring quiet, emissions-free operations to neighborhoods that need it most.
