Future Vision
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][breadcrumb-shortcode][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Development of the Greenway will take place in phases over time and will require sustained investments to implement the full vision of a nine-mile linear park. The first phase of the Greenway is now under construction following a groundbreaking ceremony in July of 2025.
With approximately 1.5 million people in the surrounding area, the Greenway seeks to provide outdoor recreation and alternative transportation opportunities to over 16% of New Jersey’s population.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”4″ accent_color=”#1e73be”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=””]
Nine Miles
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s vision for the Greenway is to foster community connections and enhance regional environmental quality across the nine miles of park, while creating a linear, multi-use corridor that supports walking, biking and active transportation.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”924″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”4″ accent_color=”#1e73be”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”938″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=””]
Accessibility & Belonging
The Greenway is thoughtfully designed to ensure accessibility and foster a sense of belonging, with ADA-compliant features that make the space welcoming and inclusive for all users.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”4″ accent_color=”#1e73be”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=””]
Eight Municipalities
Once complete, the Greenway will connect eight municipalities across Essex and Hudson counties – Jersey City, Secaucus, Kearny, Newark, Belleville, Bloomfield, Glen Ridge and Montclair.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”935″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”4″ accent_color=”#1e73be”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”928″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=””]
Preserving History
Design elements of the Greenway will reflect the corridor’s historic use, when the former rail line played a vital role in transporting iron ore and blocks of ice from northern New Jersey to the major ports of Jersey City and New York City.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”4″ accent_color=”#1e73be”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=””]
Transitway
NJ TRANSIT is collaborating with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to potentially extend the Secaucus-Meadowlands Transitway into the future state park, adding a dedicated lane for public transit.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”930″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”4″ accent_color=”#1e73be”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”926″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=””]
Economic Development
The New Jersey Economic Development Authority is working alongside the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to evaluate economic opportunities that may arise from the creation of the new state park. The EDA also serves as the Department’s delivery partner for Phase 1, managing construction activities.

Environmental Justice
The Greenway passes through overburdened communities (New Jersey Environmental Justice Law, N.J.S.A. 13:1D-157) that suffer disproportionately from lack of access to open space, health concerns and social determinants of health. Development of the Greenway will mark a major step toward expanding access to open space in these communities.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”932″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”4″ accent_color=”#1e73be”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”940″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=””]
