Preserve Info
Named for the nearby site of a long forgotten village along the east bank of the Great Egg Harbor River, this preserve is a mix of pitch pine uplands and thick, wet hardwood swamp. This mix of forest types suits the barred owl and other wildlife that favor the deep forest habitat. Some isolated vernal ponds within this preserve are known locations for Pine Barrens tree frogs. Established in 1994, thanks to a generous land donation of 129 aces, this preserve has continued to grow larger and protect even more habitat with additional donations to the Trust and acquisitions by the Green Acres Program. Thompsontown Preserve now is a hub to other public open space lands including the Trust’s Hamilton and Catawaba preserves and Atlantic County Park lands.
Public Access and Uses
The most recent acquisitions by the Green Acres Program provide limited road front parking along Somers Point Road. No maintained hiking trails or other improvements are provided. The Trust allows registration for deer hunting at this preserve.
