DEP employs an integrated approach to assessing water quality by compiling a vast amount of water monitoring data and related information collected by numerous sources throughout the state.

While the principal contributor of water quality data used for assessment purposes is generated by DEP, numerous monitoring organizations and other partners also collect relevant data. These include federal and county government agencies, regional commissions (e.g., Pinelands Commission), utility organizations, watershed associations and other voluntary citizen monitoring.

The majority of the monitoring organizations upload their data into the Water Quality Portal, however, there are other databases and web pages where data is also readily available. The table below lists these important databases with links to download the data. Additionally, a list of monitoring organizations, where they store their data, and links to their web pages is available.

DEP continues to provide data solicitation notice through the NJDEP Email List regarding the biennial development of the Integrated Report with opportunities to submit data and information. However, to provide more advance notice to data collectors and to increase efficiencies in compiling and assessing data for the Integrated Report, DEP developed a schedule of data collection and data submittal deadlines for the next six cycles. The following deadlines and other data requirements will apply to the Integrated Report developed between 2020 and 2030. These Integrated Reports will use all appropriate and readily available data.

Water Quality Monitoring Databases
  Data Web Site   Description
The Water Quality Portal (WQP) Primary water quality database. All data collected by DEP and most other monitoring organizations is accessed through the WQP. Data includes surface water parameters, groundwater parameters, sediment, fish tissue, and biological data. Does not include continuous data.
DEP Continuous Data Monitoring Access continuous data collected by DEP
USGS Continuous Data Monitoring Access continuous data collected by the US Geological Service
EcoSHEDS Access continuous stream temperature data collected by DEP and NJ stakeholders.
