Here are some ways you can be part of the CHANJ:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Residents:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Backyards<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Add more native plants and trees to your home landscape. Even small spaces count! Visit sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jerseyyards.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jersey-Friendly Yards<\/a> <i class=\"fa-regular fa-arrow-up-right-from-square text-primary\" title=\"External Web Page\"><\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/homegrownnationalpark.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Homegrown National Park<\/a> <i class=\"fa-regular fa-arrow-up-right-from-square text-primary\" title=\"External Web Page\"><\/i>, and NJDEP Fish &amp; Wildlife\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/njfw\/conservation\/backyard-habitats\/\">Backyard Habitats<\/a> page for inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Larger lands<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 See how your property or farm \u201cconnects\u201d to the <a href=\"https:\/\/njdep.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/webappviewer\/index.html?id=53339ff12f27488d8462e5e2c4c21b5c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CHANJ Mapping<\/a> <i class=\"fa-regular fa-map text-primary\" title=\"Web Mapping Application\"><\/i>. Lands within CHANJ-mapped Cores and Corridors are especially important for wildlife movement, so setting aside space for habitat in those areas is a great way to boost your connectivity value. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe even consider a conservation easement, or eventually preserving your lot for nature. The Center for Large Landscape Conservation has an excellent guide, called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/largelandscapes.org\/local-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Integrating Wildlife Habitat Connectivity Into Local Government Planning<\/a> <i class=\"fa-regular fa-arrow-up-right-from-square text-primary\" title=\"External Web Page\"><\/i> .\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Report wildlife<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Use <a href=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/njfw\/conservation\/reporting-rare-wildlife-sightings\/\">NJ Wildlife Tracker<\/a> to report sightings of rare wildlife species, or wildlife (of any kind) on roadways. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/njdep.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/webappviewer\/index.html?id=53339ff12f27488d8462e5e2c4c21b5c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CHANJ Mapping<\/a> <i class=\"fa-regular fa-map text-primary\" title=\"Web Mapping Application\"><\/i> shows which parcels intersect CHANJ Cores and Corridors, to help focus land preservation efforts on these important areas. NJDEP\u2019s Green Acres Program, various land trusts and our own NJFW Wildlife Management Area planners are incorporating the CHANJ layers into their acquisition priorities. Towns and Counties can do this, too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local governments can also include habitat connectivity in their master plans and land use decision-making. Land preservation is especially needed in habitat corridors to ensure that animals will continue to have suitable pathways to move through the landscape.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Corridors are critical! <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 Roughly 70 square kilometers (more than 17,000 acres) of CHANJ-mapped habitats became urbanized in the past decade, with Corridor lands being developed at more than four times the rate as habitat Cores. At the same time, lands within Corridors were protected at less than half the rate as lands within Cores. But when Corridors are severed by development, Core habitats become more isolated and pathways for wildlife movement are lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preserving corridors is critical. Even less traditional acquisitions can be key to holding connectivity together, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roadside parcels \u2013 especially ones next to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/webappviewer\/index.html?id=53339ff12f27488d8462e5e2c4c21b5c&amp;extent=-8839794.1489%2C4608086.5998%2C-7665721.3944%2C5145591.7827%2C102100&amp;showLayers=Environmental_1036%3BLand_3158%3BUSA_Protected_Areas_by_GAP_Status_Code_PADUS_21_9522%3BLand_Use_and_Land_Cover_2429%3BDEP_CHANJ_RCC_9265_0%3BDEP_CHANJ_RCC_4682%3Bwms_5628_Natural2020%3Bwms_7662_Natural2017%3Bwms_6804_Natural2015%3Bwms_7889_Infrared2015%3Bwms_7938_Natural2012%3Bwms_6320_Infrared2012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wildlife passage project<\/a> <i class=\"fa-regular fa-map text-primary\" title=\"Web Mapping Application\"><\/i>, where investments have already been made to help wildlife cross safely under roadways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smaller parcels that stand apart from existing open space lands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preserving corridors through central NJ is especially urgent, since few remain there and most are narrow and road-dense, creating a high degree of difficulty for wildlife trying to move through the landscape.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/njfw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/part-of-chanj-05-corridors-central-nj-map.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"462\" height=\"770\" src=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/njfw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/part-of-chanj-05-corridors-central-nj-map.png\" alt=\"Statewide View of CHANJ Mapping\" class=\"wp-image-63317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/njfw\/part-of-chanj-05-corridors-central-nj-map.png 462w, https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/njfw\/part-of-chanj-05-corridors-central-nj-map-180x300.png 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 462px) 100vw, 462px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>A statewide view of the CHANJ Mapping shows the \u201cspindly\u201d remnants of habitat connectivity in central NJ \u2013 a region that is vital for keeping long-term linkages for genetic exchange, adaptation and resiliency among populations to the north and south.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Culvert data \u2013<\/em><\/strong> The North Atlantic Aquatic Connectivity Collaborative* (NAACC) culvert inventory provides valuable insight into how passable (or impassable) our bridge and culvert infrastructure are for fish and wildlife. More than 700 stream crossing structures have been assessed across New Jersey, and you can view them from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/webappviewer\/index.html?id=53339ff12f27488d8462e5e2c4c21b5c&amp;extent=-8900351.3845%2C4598336.1168%2C-7726278.63%2C5156632.1714%2C102100&amp;showLayers=DEP_CHANJ_1198%3BDEP_CHANJ_3263%3BDEP_CHANJ_RCC_9265_0%3Bwms_5628_Natural2020%3Bwms_7662_Natural2017%3Bwms_6804_Natural2015%3Bwms_7889_Infrared2015%3Bwms_7938_Natural2012%3Bwms_6320_Infrared2012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CHANJ Mapping<\/a> <i class=\"fa-regular fa-map text-primary\" title=\"Web Mapping Application\"><\/i>. The NAACC ratings (ranging from \u201cno barrier\u201d to \u201csevere barrier\u201d) can help guide actions at the local level by showing which structures could use a connectivity upgrade, like perhaps a widening the next time the structure is due for replacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 4 of our <a href=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/njfw\/wp-content\/uploads\/njfw\/chanj_guidance.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CHANJ Guidance Document<\/a> <i class=\"fa-solid fa-file-pdf text-danger\" title=\"Adobe Acrobat PDF File\"><\/i> has helpful information on how to design and construct effective wildlife passage systems. Riparian zones around streams and rivers are critical for wildlife movement, so creating wider natural buffers with native trees or other plantings is one action with big benefits. These data are useful to transportation managers and to our CHANJ project, pointing us toward opportunities to build safer road-crossings for animals and contributing to other ecological studies, such as our recent <a href=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/njfw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/chanj-listserv-2023-01-04-wild-mammals-vs-metropolis.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gene Flow Study<\/a> <i class=\"fa-solid fa-file-pdf text-danger\" title=\"Adobe Acrobat PDF File\"><\/i>.
