{"id":11654,"date":"2022-05-12T18:59:19","date_gmt":"2022-05-12T18:59:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/njfw\/?page_id=11654"},"modified":"2026-02-24T16:18:34","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T21:18:34","slug":"do-not-disturb","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/njfw\/wildlife\/wildlife-watching\/do-not-disturb\/","title":{"rendered":"Do Not Disturb"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>Sometimes, the best thing to help wildlife is to leave it alone. <br><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Nests<\/span><br><br><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Whether it&#8217;s on the beach, in a forest, or in your backyard, do not approach an active nest.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Nesting animals are very wary of people near their nest, sometimes to the point of abandoning the nest and eggs because somebody got too close. When hiking or walking the dog in the spring and summer, stay on the trail as much as possible and keep pets on a leash. If you have to walk off the trail, watch where you step and try to avoid dense vegetation (for birds) or freshly moved dirt (for turtles) to avoid stepping on a nest. Well-intentioned people may attempt to \u201csave\u201d these animals while most often, especially for fawns and young raccoons and rabbits, the mother is nearby. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For young chicks that cannot fly, the best thing to do is to put the bird carefully back into the nest. People should keep in mind that deer and other wildlife are wild animals and have adapted to cope to the sometimes harsh winter weather, including deep snow, cold temperatures and high winds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/njfw\/conservation\/backyard-habitats\/\"><strong>Backyard bird feeding<\/strong><\/a> during winter months (<a href=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/njfw\/bears\/feeding-birds\/\"><strong>when bears are not around<\/strong><\/a>) is acceptable, but feeders can increase the risk of harm to the birds when not maintained. Wildlife that appears <a href=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/njfw\/wildlife\/wildlife-health-in-new-jersey\/\"><strong>sick <\/strong><\/a>or that died for reasons that aren\u2019t apparent can be reported to the DEP Hotline by calling, toll-free, 877-WARN-DEP (877-927-6337). Do not report obvious road kills.
