These data contribute to our critical habitat mapping and help us monitor habitat occupancy and population trends over time, ultimately helping us to manage the recovery of rare wildlife species across the state. Wildlife sightings from the public are incredibly useful to NJDEP Fish &amp; Wildlife. We recently launched the NJ Wildlife Tracker, a web application you can use from your cell phone or computer to report rare wildlife species observations and wildlife of any kind on roadways. Your sightings of wildlife on roads (dead or alive) will help our Connecting Habitat Across New Jersey (CHANJ) team identify problem spots across the state &#8211; like places with frequent roadkill or at-risk species being impacted by roads. These can point us towards opportunities to build safer road-crossings for animals&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RxNbeJvudB8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(Learn More)<\/a> <i class=\"fa-regular fa-arrow-up-right-from-square\" style=\"color: #2c51b3\"><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/njfw\/videos\/wildlife\/\"><strong>Watch More Wildlife Videos<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Marine Rare Species<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/survey123.arcgis.com\/share\/d94e3bbfcf03404289222c0118e044d9\">Marine Protected Wildlife Reporter<\/a> <i class=\"fa-regular fa-arrow-up-right-from-square\" style=\"color: #2c51b3\"><\/i> application allows the public to report sightings of, and encounters with,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/species-directory\/threatened-endangered\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">federally listed Endangered or Threatened marine species<\/a> <i class=\"fa-regular fa-arrow-up-right-from-square\" style=\"color: #2c51b3\"><\/i> including marine mammals, sea turtles, Atlantic sturgeon, as well as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/media.fisheries.noaa.gov\/dam-migration\/prohibited-shark-id-placard.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prohibited shark species<\/a> <i class=\"fa-solid fa-file-pdf\" style=\"color: #dc3545\"><\/i> in the waters off New Jersey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Birds (or Bats) with Bands<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Wild birds are routinely banded to help track survival, migration, and dispersal. Anyone who finds a banded bird should record the band number, species (if known), location, and circumstances, and report it to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/labs\/bird-banding-laboratory\">USGS Bird Banding Laboratory<\/a> <i class=\"fa-regular fa-arrow-up-right-from-square\" style=\"color: #2c51b3\"><\/i>. The band will have a 9-digit number; color bands may have short codes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>State biologists are particularly interested in bands that are field-readable, such as those used on Bald eagles, Peregrine falcons, and some other species. For those band codes, record the code and band color, and the species, location, and date, and email that to <i class=\"fa-solid fa-envelope\" title=\"Email Address\"><\/i> <a href=\"mailto:ENSPTrentonVoicemail@deptest.nj.gov\"><strong>ENSPTrentonVoicemail@deptest.nj.gov<\/strong><\/a>. Banded birds that are found dead should always be reported to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/labs\/bird-banding-laboratory\">Bird Banding Lab<\/a> <i class=\"fa-regular fa-arrow-up-right-from-square\" style=\"color: #2c51b3\"><\/i>. Any endangered or threatened birds found dead should be reported to the DEP Hotline at <strong>1-877-WARN-DEP<\/strong> <strong>(<i class=\"fa-solid fa-phone\" title=\"Phone Number\"><\/i> <a href=\"tel:1-877-927-6337\">1-877-927-6337<\/a>)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Racing pigeons are banded with plastic color bands that may have codes; those are not reportable to the Bird Banding Lab but may be found online in pigeon owners clubs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bats are also routinely banded during studies. If you find a live bat that is banded, try to photograph the bat and get a close-up of the band numbers without touching or coming within a few feet of the bat. If the bat appears injured or in need of help, reach out to a <a href=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/njfw\/wildlife\/finding-injured-or-young-wildlife\/\"><strong>NJ licensed wildlife rehabilitator<\/strong><\/a> <i class=\"fa-solid fa-map text-primary\" title=\"Web Mapping Application\"><\/i> who treats bats. If the bat you\u2019ve found is dead, please make note of the location, collect it in a ziploc bag or a container if you\u2019re willing (without directly touching the bat), or photograph the bat and its band numbers.
