Greenwood Forest WMA Forestry Management Activities

Greenwood Forest WMA Forestry Management Activities

NJ Fish and Wildlife will be conducting forestry management activities in Greenwood Forest WMA to expand early successional habitat for bobwhite quail and other wildlife species while reducing fuel loads and improving fuelbreak conditions.  Upcoming work is planned for January 1 – March 31, 2026.

The area labeled Stand 1D is pine/oak forest habitat encompassing approximately 50 acres.  This area is adjacent to the current quail management area in Greenwood Forest WMA and will be managed as pine/oak savannah habitat, expanding available early successional habitat and improving habitat connectivity.  Through irregular seed tree retention cuts, stand basal area (BA) will be reduced from 127 sq ft BA to approximately 80 sq ft BA.  Treatment is planned to occur as a patchwork mosaic across the stand to promote structural diversity and soft edges.  Seed tree harvest and regeneration with reserves will regulate the present composition of this mixed species stand and promote diversity and growth in favorable residual trees.  Snags will be left standing to promote habitat for red-headed woodpeckers and other snag-dependent species.

The area labeled Stand 2E encompasses approximately 20 acres of oak/pine forest habitat and is situated along one of the primary forest roads within Greenwood Forest WMA.  Through selective cutting, this area will be managed as a shaded fuelbreak with a +/- 300-foot variable buffer.  The shaded fuelbreak will have a reduction of fuel by up to +/- 130 trees per acre (TPA) (current TPA is 329) and an increase in crown base height (CBH) to > 6’.  This will reduce hazard fuel loads, improve emergency response access, and increase the safety and efficiency of operations including wildland fire response and prescribed burn operations.

This project has gone through internal DEP review via the Land Management Review process to minimize impacts to cultural and natural resources.
