DEP STATE PARK SERVICE UNVEILS NEW INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND IN SUSSEX COUNTY, ANNOUNCES COMPLETION OF EQUIPMENT UPGRADES TO 24 STATE PARK PLAYGROUNDS THROUGHOUT STATE<\/strong><\/h3>\n

(24\/P50) TRENTON \u2013 <\/strong>Fulfilling a plan to expand healthy recreation opportunities for New Jerseyans of all abilities, the Department of Environmental Protection today cut the ribbon on a new inclusive playground at Waywayanda State Park in Sussex County and announced completion of an 18-month project to replace equipment at 24 State Park Service playgrounds across New Jersey.<\/p>\n

The new inclusive playground at Wawayanda State Park<\/a> follows the installation of similar playgrounds in 2023 at\u00a0, within\u00a0Wharton State Forest<\/a>\u00a0in Burlington County, and earlier this year at Cheesequake State Park<\/a>\u00a0in Middlesex County. These new playgrounds ensure that the public has an inclusive playground in each region of the state park system as part of the DEP\u2019s Enhanced Playground Initiative, which also replaced outdated playground equipment at select state parks across New Jersey.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday we celebrate inclusivity, recognizing that every child, regardless of ability, deserves safe equipment on which to play and opportunities for fun without limitation,\u201d\u00a0said Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette. <\/strong>\u201cThese important upgrades further elevate the Murphy Administration\u2019s commitment to having state-of-the-art playgrounds across New Jersey.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe completion of these 24 playground replacements ensures we are providing safe and enjoyable spaces for families that come to New Jersey\u2019s state parks to spend a day picnicking, for a hike, or a long weekend in a cabin or at a campground, while we also make progress in reducing the State Park Service\u2019s capital backlog,\u201d said John Cecil, Assistant Commissioner for State Parks, Forests & Historic Sites<\/strong>. \u201cThe inclusive playgrounds provide an outdoor play space suitable for every child, helping with physical movement and mental stimulation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Like the inclusive playgrounds installed at Atsion Recreation Area and Cheesequake State Park, the new playground at Wawayanda State Park is tailored to individuals with physical disabilities and includes features to enhance the playground experience for those with developmental and intellectual disabilities.<\/p>\n

Ground-level activities that are part of the play structure include musical instruments to enhance auditory and cognitive stimulation and hand cyclers to promote upper body development. The playground also has adaptive swings for those unable to use a belt swing and slide transfer decks for a more comfortable transfer from a mobility device onto a slide.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Enhanced Playground Initiative not only modernized our playgrounds but also reinforced the State Park Service\u2019s commitment to accessibility,\u201d said Rebecca Fitzgerald, Administrator of the State Park Service<\/strong>. \u201cBy incorporating adaptive swings, sensory play elements, accessible equipment and shade features, we\u2019re fostering an inclusive space where children of varying abilities can play side by side, promoting inclusivity from a young age.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 24 replacement playgrounds across seven counties with equipment upgrades now have at least one feature found at a fully inclusive playground as well as climbing walls, corkscrew slides and new swings.<\/p>\n

Completion of all playground replacements and construction was funded from\u00a0Corporate Business Tax<\/a>\u00a0revenues through the\u00a0Preserve New Jersey Act<\/a>, which is administered by the DEP and matched by a 50 percent federal\u00a0Land and Water Conservation Fund<\/a>\u00a0recreation grant.<\/p>\n

Last year, the Murphy Administration announced the investment of nearly $100 million in projects through the DEP\u2019s Green Acres Program to develop or update parks and preserve open space, including construction of inclusive playgrounds for differently abled children as part of\u00a0Jake\u2019s Law<\/a>.<\/p>\n

These playgrounds complement DEP\u2019s\u00a0Outside, Together!<\/em>\u00a0initiative.\u00a0Among other goals, Outside, Together!<\/em><\/a>\u00a0works to elevate outdoor recreation and planning efforts to expand high-quality open space opportunities to everyone and advance equity and environmental justice through outdoor recreation.<\/p>\n
