Festivities throughout the year will take place across New Jersey and the nation, beginning in the Garden State with the annual First Day Hikes event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than ever, this year\u2019s First Day Hikes are an opportunity to get outdoors and appreciate nature by visiting our parks and forests, some of which bore witness to the American Revolution and fight for freedom,\u201d <strong>said Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette.<\/strong> \u201cSpending time with family and friends while enjoying the beauty of our environment is one of the best ways to appreciate the diverse landscapes of New Jersey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 30 hikes are planned for activity levels ranging from beginner to advanced. New Jersey State Parks aims to give people of all abilities an opportunity to experience nature and improve their physical and mental well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Across New Jersey nearly 2,000 hikers participated in First Day Hikes on Jan. 1, 2025, collectively traveling 4,000 miles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we kick off 2026 and the United States\u2019 250th anniversary, First Day Hikes invite everyone to celebrate this historic milestone by exploring New Jersey\u2019s diverse state parks, forests and historic sites,\u201d <strong>said John Cecil, Assistant Commissioner for State Parks, Forests &amp; Historic Sites. <\/strong>\u201cWhether you\u2019re a seasoned hiker or just beginning to explore the outdoors, there is a First Day Hike for every ability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><u><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12208 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/newsrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/people-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"341\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/newsrel\/people-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/newsrel\/people-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/newsrel\/people.jpg 908w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Revolutionary War-Themed Hikes<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All events are free. Some, however, require preregistration and are weather-dependent. A sampling of this year\u2019s offerings include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Perrine Hill: Where Molly Pitcher Fought &#8212;<\/strong> Hike 1.5 miles through the farm fields of <a href=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/parksandforests\/state-park\/monmouth-battlefield-state-park\/\">Monmouth Battlefield State Park<\/a> in Monmouth County, where Gen. George Washington commanded the Continental Army and Molly Pitcher fought during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ygxhe2O2BNQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battle of Monmouth<\/a>. This guided hike offers natural beauty along with stories of the people and events of the pivotal Revolutionary War battle that took place June 28, 1778.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Revolution to Recreation<\/strong> &#8212; Celebrate the nation\u2019s 250<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/the-civilian-conservation-corps.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)<\/a>, who worked to develop the recreational amenities in New Jersey\u2019s state parks and forests. Participants will hike four miles along the CCC Trail in <a href=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/parksandforests\/state-park\/bass-river-state-forest\/\">Bass River State Forest<\/a>, Burlington County, to honor the work that supported Bass River State Forest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stars, Stripes &amp; Strides: Step into 2026 While Honoring 250 Years<\/strong> &#8212; Join a two-mile hike at <a href=\"https:\/\/deptest.nj.gov\/parksandforests\/state-park\/spruce-run-recreation-area\/\">Spruce Run Recreation Area<\/a>, Hunterdon County that follows a flat route with scenic reservoir views, fresh winter air, and an opportunity to reflect on 2025 while stepping into 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hope Farm Hogmanay Hike<\/strong> &#8212; Hike 3.1 miles around the historic bounds of \u201cHope Farm\u201d at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.gov\/dep\/parksandforests\/historic\/olddutch-wallace\/odwh-wallacehouse.htm\">Wallace House Historic Site<\/a> in Somerset County to mark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotland.org\/events\/hogmanay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hogmanay<\/a>, the Scottish New Year celebration, while also learning about the Wallace House\u2019s 250<sup>th<\/sup> birthday. Built by Scottish immigrant John Wallace, the Wallace House later became Gen. First Day Hikes began more than 20 years ago in Massachusetts State Parks at Blue Hills Reservation. The challenge encourages visitors of all ages and abilities to explore the state\u2019s 41 parks, 11 forests, five recreation areas and more than 50 historic sites and districts while building healthy habits and celebrating this milestone year.<\/p>\n<p>Choose among five challenges:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>250 Miles in a Year<\/strong>: For the avid hiker, biker, or walker, average just under five miles per week at any New Jersey state park, forest or historic site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>25.0 Miles in a Year<\/strong>: Perfect for casual visitors, average two miles per month hiking or walking at any New Jersey state park, forest or historic site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>25.0 Different Trails<\/strong> <strong>in a Year<\/strong>: Explore 25 different trails at any New Jersey state park, forest or historic site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>2.50 Miles per Week<\/strong>: Walk, run, or bike 2.5 miles at any New Jersey state park, forest or historic site.
