Over the past decade, 200 aged or deceased trees were removed for road reconstruction<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59737492 BCX0\">.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59737492 BCX0\"> The <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59737492 BCX0\">city<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59737492 BCX0\"> saw the NJUCF 2021 Stewardship Grant as an opportunity to reduce the annual tree deficit and diversify their tree population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>PARTNERS<\/strong><br \/>\n<span class=\"TextRun SCXW109060127 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109060127 BCX0\">The project saw active participation from various <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109060127 BCX0\">local <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109060127 BCX0\">partners. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW109060127 BCX0\">SustainableEHC<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109060127 BCX0\"> played a crucial role by providing educational opportunities for <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109060127 BCX0\">residents<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109060127 BCX0\"> and going door-to-door in areas where trees had been removed to assess the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109060127 BCX0\"> resident\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109060127 BCX0\"> desire for new plantings. The EHC Green Team volunteered to update the city\u2019s tree inventory as new trees were added. Additionally, the EHC Garden Club took on the responsibility of caring for the newly planted trees in Lincoln Park, a centrally <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109060127 BCX0\">located<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109060127 BCX0\"> park in Egg Harbor City. This collective effort <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109060127 BCX0\">demonstrates<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109060127 BCX0\"> that it truly takes a village to raise a successful urban forest.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW109060127 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>ACTION<\/strong><br \/>\n<span class=\"TextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\">In early December 2022, 68 trees were planted in various locations throughout the city<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\">EHC<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\">effectively <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\">used their tree inventory to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\">ensure<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\"> they planted <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\">species<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\"> that would add to the city&#8217;s tree diversity, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\">such as<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\"> Willow Oak, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW246036833 BCX0\">Sweetbay<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\"> Magnolia, and Eastern Redbud. This was an important goal in their Community Forestry Management <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\">Plan<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\"> (<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\">CFMP)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\">.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246036833 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW246036833 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>FUNDING\/RESOURCES<\/strong><br \/>\n<span class=\"TextRun SCXW42254835 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42254835 BCX0\">Egg Harbor City, accredited with the NJUCF program, applied <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42254835 BCX0\">for<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42254835 BCX0\"> and received $30,000 from the 2021 Stewardship Grant awarded by the DEP\u2019s Urban &amp; Community Forestry (NJUCF) program. The grant required a 25% match, which Egg Harbor City fulfilled with a $7,500 cash contribution, bringing the total project cost to $37,500.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW42254835 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RESULTS &amp; BENEFITS<\/strong><br \/>\n<span class=\"TextRun SCXW231473212 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231473212 BCX0\">Through the 2021 Stewardship Grant, Egg Harbor City was able to reduce their annual tree deficit by adding 68 trees. This follows the planting of 61 trees with the NJUCF\u2019s 2016 Stewardship Grant. The combined efforts of the 2016 and 2021 grants aim to address the gaps caused by construction, severe weather, and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231473212 BCX0\">declining tree health<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231473212 BCX0\">.
